Musique Royale - Remembrances

Musique Royale invites you to "Remembrances,” an hour-long program taking listeners into the sonic world of Ziya Tabassian, whose intricate and energizing compositions are based on Persian rhythmic cycles from the 17th and 18th centuries. Four performers each contribute a distinct musical language and technical expertise, with the tour featuring Didem Başar, a virtuoso Turkish kanun player, kamanche player Sareh Borna, Mohammad Sahraei, a musician and ethnomusicologist originally from Iran, and Ziya Tabassian: a world percussionist, brilliant composer and artistic director based in Montreal.

Freya Milliken is an award-winning singer-songwriter known for her rich voice and introspective songs, blending folk and indie rock influences. Her debut EP Wholeheartedly explores queer love, longing, and joy with raw honesty, embracing the beauty and challenges of loving and being loved. She has performed at major Canadian festivals like the ECMAs, Deep Roots and Winnipeg Folk Festival, and toured in Europe with the Acadia University Singers for the Singing In Flanders Fields Project.

Whether dealing with the pressing themes of a just world or the joy of the mundane, his songs reveal a reverence for nature and a genuine insight into the complex meaning of home. Add the delightful silliness of titles like “Underwear” and “Fishin’ for Pickles” to his engaging performing style, and Jamie always gets his audience singing and dancing along. Jamie has six solo albums to his credit and will be releasing a new album later in 2025. He performs solo, with Washboard Dave Clingan, or with his band The Jungernauts.

ELEPHANT HEART is a jazz/improv work featuring the compositions of Nova Scotia’s Sam Wilson and American saxophonist Phillip Greenlief. The piece veers steadily through shifting currents of jazz composition and improvisation that enable elastic and concrete forms.
The piece is performed by Sam (guitar), Phillip (sax), Gabriella Ciurcovich (bass) and Caito Macdonald (drums), with Andrew Jackson opening on trombone.
